Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Daytona Beach Visioning?

The Visioning process began in 2006 at the direction of the Daytona Beach City Commission.Over the course of a year, citizens from the many Daytona Beach neighborhoods and businesses met to discuss a mutual Vision for the city in the next 20 years. From the larger group setting, smaller 'Action Teams' were formed with citizens volunteering their time to research and draft reports to be included in the greater Vision.

Hundreds of residents, business owners and stakeholders participated in the meetings and contributed their insight into the future of Daytona Beach.

The Daytona Beach Vision Plan was presented to the City Commission in March of 2008.The Commissioners agreed to accept the Vision and consult the document for assistance as they make the decisions to guide the city into the future.

Additionally, the Vision Steering Committee proposed that they continue to meet to review and update the Vision Plan. The City approved, and the Vision Implementation Committee (as it is now called) continues to meet regularly as an independent organization. When the terms of the Original Steering Committee expired in 2009, several members agreed to continue to serve, and new members were appointed by Committee Members and City Commissioners to continue the legacy of the Vision.

2. Haven't we already done similar planning (like the Vision)?

Yes we have. We have done city planning, but it has been over 15 years since we have had any planning that was 'high level', community-wide and citizen based. Today we are a more diverse community. We have seen an evolution of our tourism trade. We have seen significant regional changes and changes in our neighboring communities as well. We are different than we were 15 years ago. A changed community such as ours needs to re-assess and plan accordingly. The Daytona Beach Vision hopes to encompass the needs and desires of the entire spectrum of the community. The Steering Committee will continue to meet to update and help to implement the Vision. However, continued community involvement is essential, if the Vision is to continue to be a 'living document'.

3. How can people from Daytona Beach get involved?

The Steering Committee will continue to meet monthly to discuss the Vision and current City issues. The public is welcome to attend all meetings of the Steering Committee.Meeting dates are posted on the website www.daytonabeachvisioning.com

4. What was the Stakeholder Group?

The Stakeholder group was a large group of 160 citizen volunteers identified by the Visioning Committee to insure that the broadest interests of the community were reflected in the development of the Vision Plan for the City of Daytona Beach. This group populated action teams that provided factual information and public opinion that helped development of the segments of the Vision Plan.

5. Does the Florida State Sunshine Law apply to the Vision Implementation Committee?

According the Daytona Beach City Attorney, no.

Since the current Vision Implementation Committee was not created by the City Commission, it is a private entity created by the members of the previously authorized committee. The current committee has not been delegated any responsibility by the City Commission.

The current committee has not been charged with any advisory task by the City Commission or authorized to act on behalf of the City Commission in any respect.
